Tailor Yourself to Job Interviews

The bottom line is to feel confident from a smart-fitting suit and its first impression,
to your interview responses and your performance on the job.

A well-cut suit should flatter your frame by broadening your shoulders and minding your midsection. This signals great job-seeking traits like attention to detail and self-confidence. For any job interview, be sure you are prepared and look polished.

How should my suit jacket fit? Avoid shoulder divots.

Check the fit. Does the top button of your jacket sit just above your naval? Do sleeves end where your thumb and wrist meet? Does the shoulder seam sit smoothly at the corner of your shoulder? Or is  a weird divot created because the shoulder width is incorrect? Finally does the jacket completely cover your butt, and no more?

Custom tailored medium grey suit jacket by San Francisco Tailor paired with versatile blue paisley necktie

A medium grey bespoke suit is extremely versatile.

Color consistent with industry? A tailor made medium or dark grey suit looks more youthful than a stark black suit. In fact it’s much more versatile and a great candidate for all of those important appointments — from job interviews to daily office wear to networking events after work. Most of all, it’s still industry appropriate.

For a contemporary take on the navy suit, consider a bespoke jacket that’s single-breasted with notched lapels. It’s sure to consistently look good even with a white dress shirt, a textured tie and brown brogue dress shoes. Complement its ordinary color with warm tones of yellow, orange and red or stay cool during winter months with grey and other shades of blue as well as purple.

Wearing a standard issue suit to an interview for a creative job could mute your personality and je ne sais quoi. Hiding what makes your unique can hurt your chances at landing that job.

Color blocking separate top and bottoms is oft chosen by media, advertising, and fashion professionals. Printed shirts are also an alternative to displaying your style. Geometric or subtle floral prints can exhibit range of thinking from hard and analytical to soft and expressive.

We make elegance affordable & job promotion accessible as you pay off loans or mortgages.

Made to measure suits can be pricey. Don’t worry! Without the overhead of a brick and mortar shop or webcam body measurements, we offer the lowest prices in fully personalized suits online. You’ll even have money left to splurge. Book yourself an appointment with the hairdresser, or purchase a tie clip — a small but noticeable accessory to set you apart.

A Suit, A Second Chance at Life

‘We don’t know our own power. We don’t know how amazing we are,’ remarks Gabriel Bristol, a man who went from homelessness to head of a fast-growing customer service provider.

Know a diamond in the rough? Perhaps you overcame personal obstacles and want to give a somebody a second chance at life and a career. Rather than donate money this holiday season, sponsor a job applicant with a suit scholarship. The SF Tailor offers the lowest prices in fully custom suits online and delivers within a month.

Smart people with troubled pasts need opportunity. They’re overlooked, so they forget their own value. They lose hope unless they’ve participated in workforce development programs and enterprises like Delancey Street Foundation and Swords to Plowshares, where graduates leave with marketable skills and a future. Charities like St. Anthony’s also try to provide interview and employment apparel — but choices can be limited, especially for clients of larger proportions.

Dapper but Not Disabled

After a car accident, I faced several physical challenges and depression. With the support of family and friends, I focused on surviving. And as long as I’ve had my wheelchair, I’ve known what I’m capable of doing — but other people don’t know til they get to know me.

This summer the only disappointment from my internship was suiting up for work. It was first time I had to wear professional clothes, which didn’t fit me well. I felt self-conscious. I want to look good and I want people to look at my wardrobe, not my wheelchair.

After I cross the graduation stage this December, I want to look as confident as I feel during job interviews and on the job. — Dapper but Not Disabled in Denver

Dear Dapper but Not Disabled in Denver,

First, thanks for contacting us. We’re inspired by the obstacles you’ve overcome during physical recovery.

Second, congrats on graduation! Don’t be anxious about interviews. We are happy to custom tailor a suit, so you make a great first impression — and always look your best. Since fit and proportion is critical, measurements should be taken in your chair, not lying down. Then you can use our online tools to customize your 2-piece bespoke suit.

Your body may be beyond your control, but your sense of style isn’t. In fact it becomes more meaningful and essential in retaining your dignity. — Fiona Jarvis

Here are 4 style hacks to draw eyes to your face, so people focus on what you say:

    • Trousers with broad cuffs demonstrate your attention to detail.
Ignoring your ankles can suggest you’re sloppy and inattentive. Because you haven’t always used a wheelchair, note that sitting trousers are 3-4 inches longer than standard trousers. So you may want to add 3 inches to a previous length of up to 31 inches, 4 inches for a previous length of 33 inches or longer.
    • A vest or waistcoat can hide your waistline, showing off a broad chest and shoulders.
These physical assets project strength and confidence.

Embrace who you are. Be comfortable with your character. Job applicants tailor their talking points to their skills, talents and potential. By law interviewers cannot ask you about your disability. Why not impress them and bring a functional disability statement; the American Foundation for the Blind recommends these tips.

Again we appreciate the privilege to dress you. Good luck with the job search!

3 Ways you Relate to our Customers

When some people first hear about The SF Tailor, they’re surprised: If you’re younger than age 35 and used to shopping at department stores, you’re used to trying on several jackets and pants. You pray to find two pieces that fit your body shape, are the same color, and don’t max out your credit card.

Before visiting TheSFtailor.com, our customers never imagined buying a suit could be so easy!

Young professionals frequently seek us out for the following reasons:

photo credit thesftailor.com(1) College students & recent grads want a solid color suit for first interviews and first jobs.

From economists to entry-level engineers, med students to mid-level managers, our tailor-made clothes are comfortable for infrequent suit wearers. Single-breasted, straight-waist jackets are common — but you can still express your personality through distinctions. Our turnaround time is roughly 3 weeks, pretty fast compared to machine-made, ill-fitting suits from department stores.

(2) Finance majors and salespeople usually suit up daily.
Until you earn C-level salaries and larger commissions, we specialize in bespoke suits for men and women at affordable prices. Online competitors typically charge $500-1000 per suit. That’s more than twice our price — since they’re opening permanent showrooms.

(3) Both infrequent and daily suit wearers attend special occasions as grooms, groomsmen or guests. Our blog explains a variety of formal wedding wear men and women may choose to celebrate milestones. Familiar with the comfort of our daily custom made suits, our clientele return to us for tuxedos. We are pleased to offer elegance at an accessible price.

photo credit businessinsider.comTake 5-10 minutes to get measured from a local alterations service. Then fully customize your suit from our wide range of colors, fabrics, and styles.

P.S. Send the SF Tailor your measurements and a photo to order one-of-a-kind suits. We recreated a red carpett James Bond film premiere look for a costume party. Recently we were contacted about a Heath Ledger Joker suit.

Top 3 Mistakes Groom, Groomsmen Must Avoid

At one time or another, we all wanted to marry Superman… but we never thought he’d wear his superhero costume to the wedding ceremony.

To save your wedding day, the San Francisco Tailor comes to the rescue as we ask and answer:

What are the most common suit and tuxedo mistakes? How can I avoid them?

First, don’t rent your tux. Rental tuxedos are like bowling alley shoes and/or roller skates. They can look really worn out. For about the same price, order and own a custom made tuxedo. We deliver the bespoke clothing to your door for your convenience — in as fast as three weeks. By no means should you wait til the last minute, and then face the wrath of Bridezilla!

Second, know your size. It’s difficult to find a good fit in stores. That’s a major reason we founded our online tailoring firm. Visit a neighborhood alterations service — perhaps at your dry cleaner — and in minutes you’ll know your measurements. When you try on the jacket, shoulders should be close to the body but not constricting. When your arms are at your side, sleeves ought to be long enough to show a quarter-inch to a half-inch of shirt cuff. Moreover, the overall jacket length should end at the base of your thumbs, not fingertips.

Third, choose a stylish yet classic tuxedo or suit. Light or charcoal (dark) grey, midnight blue, navy or black always seem sophisticated. Avoid unique or crazy colors… that could take attention away from the bride on her day. (With her permission?) The groom and his entourage can spice up their look with shawl collar tuxes, suspenders, bow ties or accessories.

If you like fashion trends, ladies can’t have all the fun with mismatched bridesmaid dresses. Read up on mismatched suits for groomsmen. After the wedding, your best men can confidently and comfortably wear the suits to individual job interviews, work, power meetings or networking events — and certainly know your moral support is with them.

Since 2010 the SF Tailor has customized tuxedos and suits so you look your best… because you never know where you might meet your significant other or your next employer!

Stripe or Solid Suits

We’re celebrating National Flag Day, 14 June, with a tribute to stripe or solid suits for men and women.

Wear solid suits to interviews for your earliest jobs or internships. Your go-to suit shouldn’t draw much attention. Your interviewer wants to focus on your answers, not attire. Navy, charcoal (medium grey) or light grey is suitable for daily office wear. These colors are essential to your wardrobe. Add variation with shirts, ties and especially shoes.

Just as soldiers earn their stripes, working professionals earn their pinstripe suits. The versatility of striped suits sets you apart from rank-and-file employees. Cosmopolitan city dwellers from New York to Boston to Chicago also love the confidence the stripes connote.

Certain professions associate with the power of pinstripes include the banking and finance industry… but it’s not exclusive. Anybody from business people, doctors, attorneys, real estate agents who collaborates with upscale clients can rely on pinstripes to make a memorable impression.

* If you attend a lot of networking events, don’t forget to wear your solid suits too. You don’t want people to think the pinstripe is the only suit in your closet!

What to wear with pinstripes Be careful about stripes in your tie or shirt. Bold personalities can rock multiple stripes — but too many stripes, especially with the same distance between the stripes, looks too calculated… You know what we mean?

Mixing and matching It’s harder to wear a pinstripe jacket and trousers separately, but you can show some flexibility in less formal settings. For some variation to your daily look, pair a navy jacket with pinstripe pants… make sure the hue (or color) match. We’ve experimented with a solid charcoal jacket and trousers with charcoal pinstripes.

A note about tuxedos Why would you want to have black tie? Technically, a tuxedo is a solid suit. If you wear suits every day (and own enough) — you’re most likely have the opportunity to wear a black tie at least once or twice a year. This past blog entry takes explains formal attire.

Menswear for Women

photo credit fmaurer.netAny recruiter advises job candidates to be themselves during an interview. After all you only get one chance to make a first impression. What does this mean for women who prefer menswear?

Men and women who have bought off-the-rack suits from the men’s section of a department store know how uncomfortable and pricey they are.

Whether or not you ID yourself as a lesbian or trans-masculine person, women with a strong sense of self worth can make bolder choices in clothing now — more than any other time in history.

So where do you begin the process to truly express yourself?

Check our online advice regarding measurements. Visit a local alterations service to get your custom measurements in minutes (and typically for free). Then configure your suit to your very own specifications! We offer a wide range of fabric and lining for suits alone… and even more choices for shirting fabrics.

If this is your first made-to-measure suit, you cannot help but be enthusiastic.

Equality in fashion: Alyson White, best men, looking sharp.

Actually our clientele enjoy the confidence and comfort of their custom made orders, that women have returned to us for personalized tuxedos for weddings. Young women are feeling free to wear suit up for high school proms and sorority formals as well.

Unfortunately it’s 2015 and even tailors are still uncomfortable working with women.

However The SF Tailor established itself in 2010 after we also experienced poor-fitting, yet expensive suits that reinforce sexual stereotypes.

What to wear to an interview? A suit that compliments your physique and personality.

Start with a well-tailored two-piece suit for men or women, remembering these 7 essential details. Got special requests? Let us know. We’ve helped suit up job candidates who are differently abled, besides men who are taller or shorter than average. We haven’t overlooked the styling needs of petite women in suits either. Win BIG in the interviews, and then let a casual or formal workplace determine your daily look.

photo credit pinimg.comWhat to wear on a first date?
Put some thought into your selection. Impress but don’t intimidate. Confidence equally attracts women and men.

On women, a suit jacket or blazer implies power — not pushover — but your casual look says playful. Complete your statement with thoughtfully chosen shoes, handbag and accessories.

On men, a jacket is a hint of how well you clean up when you must wear a full suit. You can pair it with (1) a dress shirt, but no tie (2) a t-shirt with a crew neck or V-neck (3) even a polo shirt. We prefer to wear jeans, but khaki-colored trousers hit the beach too. Before you leave the house, ask a good, honest friend if you fail the douchebag test.

What color matches brown?
 Everything even navy and black.

For Spring / Summer months, we like a lighter monochromatic palate. In other words, choose different shades of brown. The jacket on the right is made from a light-weight fabric as well. Come Autumn / Winter seasons, the heavy tweed fabric made from wool will return. We especially love the rich, complex patterns that feature darker and lighter shades of brown.

Grads, Interns: Ready to Dress to Impress?

photo credit dailymail.co.ukAs April ends, have you confirmed your summer internships?  or graduates, have you thought about where you’ll apply for work?

Your resumes or CVs should be prepared, and proofread by somebody in the university Career Services office. But will your lack of professional dress deter you from job opportunities?

You don’t need to win a lottery to enter the workforce with custom made attire. The SF Tailor specializes in affordable tailor-made (and therefore better–fitting) suits for men and women. Our turnaround time is about 3 weeks. That’s rather quick considering expensive, mass produced, ill-fitting suits sold at department stores. Spare yourself the frustration. Get smart!

Take 5-10 minutes to get accurate measurements from a local alterations service. (Note: These individuals usually do minor changes like hemming.)

Then fully customize your suit from a wide range of colors, fabrics, and styles via our website. Black and blue suits are classic. Interviewers expect them. Wearing a bright shirt is unprofessional in most offices. If you must add color, be subtle with a necktie or pocket square.

Our online only presence means personalized suits as low as $254 USD.
We pass the savings on to you!

photo credit cdninstagram.comOur fastest turnaround is 3 weeks. (Expedite production time of future purchases by saving your measurements on our secure website.) We dedicate our attention to your suit in our private studio, where we hand-craft and detail your look for success.

We don’t have distractions like competitors with public boutiques and pop-up shops that charge $450 USD or more for machine construction. They’re busy earning higher dividends for their investors.

Instead the SF Tailor offers custom-made, high-quality elegance at affordable prices for interns and graduatesgrooms on a budget, plus new and small business-owners. We love that our clients feel confident and look good climbing the corporate ladder.

Til you make your millions, why settle for ill-fitting, poorly-made,
disposable suits off-the-rack?

I’m a Woman in a Suit, Not a Tomboy

photo credit elle.comSince the SF Tailor was founded 5 years ago, we have been defying labels.

First, we challenged off-the-rack labels. We decided to stop spending excess amounts of money on clothes that fit us poorly. For similar retail prices, we invested in fully customized, bespoke clothes.

Knowing the suits complimented the best and worse assets
of our bodies make us feel confident.

Today, we’re proud to tailor suits for women — especially those with aspirations for success and the executive suite. Don’t settle for department store selections that defined female suits in the 1980’s.

A woman in a suit must feel comfortable in a boardroom or courtroom. She’s not a tomboy, trying to fit in somewhere she feels unwelcomed.

The SF Tailor team assists individuals who seek stylish professional attire that is constructed to personal measurements and preference, especially trans-masculine attire.

Our own personal experiences at retailers deterred us from shopping on more than one occasion. When we wanted less frilly female suits, men’s clothiers simply did not understand the feminine frame. They also failed to comprehend the stylistic struggles of petite women or athletic women.

We recognize each person has a unique physique and should not have a difficult time finding appropriate clothing. Stop procrastinating and take a few minutes to design your power suit at theSFtailor.com.
