Ready to wear clothes aren’t designed with you in mind. If you’re lucky enough to fit mainstream sizes, you can settle for something — but you’ll never know a perfect fit and self-assurance it can bring to your character.

The SF Tailor team creates each dress shirt with skill, care and pride. The shirt will retain its good appearance and shape. Clothes crafted exclusively for you fit correctly. So you can look and feel your best.

Perhaps you have important clients you want to impress. Monogrammed cuffs are an exquisite detail — and your business partners will notice. Customizing the thread color of the button holes also signals your attention to detail. Do your clients and vendors know who you are?  Gain an unspoken advantage in negotiations and close those contracts.

People who reserve their customized shirts for extra special occasions get opportunities to excel, but those chances are fewer and farther apart.

Tailored shirts are often better quality than store bought shirts. When you also consider the confidence they bring and the opportunities for professional advancement, you get a greater ROI (return on your investment). You don’t need to work on Wall Street to get great value for your money.

As an online tailor, The SF Tailor, already lowers our overhead to offer you affordable elegance.

Is a Faster, Cheaper, Better Suit Possible?

When some of our clients receive their first – ever custom tailored suits, they often feel like Neil Armstrong on the moon: one small step for man, one giant leap for man’s self-esteem

Let’s rewind and review how we got here together:

At first these individuals were hesitant and doubtful of online custom tailors. Which online tailor is the best? Can I trust Google search results? I’m ordering online but prices are still expensive. Other online tailors’ suits are even cheaper. Maybe I’ll go back to the department store…

Can The SF Tailor really make a faster, cheaper, better – fitting suit for me?

Before your suit is tailored by hand, take a few minutes to get your measurements. Simply visit an alterations service. (BTW these individuals cannot necessarily sew a bespoke suit. They focus on minor changes.) With accurate measurements, fully customize your suit at theSFtailor.com.

The fastest turnaround time we offer
is two weeks.

Bespoke services can start at four-figures when you consider the overhead of a brick-and-mortar store, excessive inventory of fabrics, client service representatives, and more. With a two-week deadline, we’re focusing on your suit in our studio — instead of getting distracted by walk-ins who aren’t sure custom-made is for them. We share our cost savings with you, our clients and friends.

Our online custom suiting is more accessible, starting at less than $250 USD.

Even top Google-ranked competitors charge at least $450 USD for custom online suits. They use digital cutting and machine construction, commanding higher profit margins (for their investors) than we do. They’ll offer discounts to spur sales. On the other hand, we maintain a tradition of hand tailoring and detailing. We enjoy our work — and won’t under-sell our staff and their craft.

What you get is custom-made, high-quality elegance at a affordable price point.

From college and university graduates to small businessowners and entrepreneurs, our clients want to feel confident and look good. They haven’t made their millions — yet. Til then, why should they settle for cheap, poorly-made, disposable suits off-the-rack?

5 Tailoring Tips for Petite Women

We’re celebrating Short Girl Appreciation Day with five tailoring tips for petite women — who are 5’4″ and under, or 163 cm and under.

First, petite doesn’t mean short and slim. Department stores and pret-a-porter (ready to wear) brands however cut fabric and patterns with that in mind. Narrower shoulders and shorter inseams can be uncomfortable and unflattering for short ladies with larger proportions.

Empire waist lengthens petite legs & compliment curves.

    • A balancing act is needed if you’re a bustier, well-endowed woman.
An empire waist cuts the torso just below the bustline. This will create a great visual effect — lengthening those petite legs. Pair a fitted top with a high-waist skirt, trousers or jeans… and even ballerina flats to network your way around the city. Don’t hide what you’ve got! Extra baggy or extra long shirts will only call more attention to your top half.

BONUS: Empire-style waists designed for regular sizes are easier to find than exclusive petite sizing. Cut that pity party short, and get out the door to shop!

  • Layers can fake a perfect fit.

Invest in a custom tailored jacket. Every woman should have a black blazer in her wardrobe.

Dress it up for business meetings and presentations. Inspiring confidence, it makes a powerful statement. Dress it down with a trendy camisole or a t-shirt for a flirty evening on the town, or fun weekend brunch with your entourage of besties.

If those tops don’t fit your form in some places, your bespoke blazer will still make you look fabulous! Cuff long sleeves to instantly lengthen arms.

BONUS: A fitted shirt under a cropped sweater also lengthens the torso. Longer necklaces can draw eyes downward away from your face, as well as drawing eyes upward away from thicker hips and thighs.

faux pas! These trouser hems make a short woman look shorter.

  • Your legs are not the problem. Ill-fitting pants are.
Department stores & popular brands don’t design clothes with you in mind. Proportion is key! Trousers should break atop shoes. Bunching and cuffed hems are quick — but poor fixes. Also vertical patternsdraw eyes upward; choose from a large selection of fabric for you to fully customize your trousers and skirts

  • Pair shoes and bottoms that are similar in color.

A monochromatic look gives the illusion of a longer silhouette. Stock your closet with shoes similar in color to your skin tone as well as your stockings / nylons.

Be mindful of your coat as well. The SF Tailor hand tailors clothing for every client. Select your fabric and lining to personalize one of four popular styles. We like the Picadilly: It’s cropped and especially complimentary for petite ladies.

Better yet — send us your measurements and a photo of a coat worn by your favorite celebrity. We specialize in these types of orders.

  • Last but not least, be CONFIDENT.
Don’t resent your body. Embrace what you’ve been given. Know what can make you look good… and know we can make you look good! So you feel confident when you wear what you love.

Easiest Question to Answer for Newly Engaged

Katherine Heigl reveals her excitement and engagement ring.

First, congrats to all newly engaged couples!

We know serious thought and time has been spent on planning proposals. We also know some money and thought have been spent on that bling of a ring!

Let The SF Tailor answer the easiest wedding planning question: Are suits or tuxedos the way to go?

Here are some considerations for you to decide:

  • What time is your event? Evenings are more formal than afternoon affairs.
  • Will the event have an Oscar-nominated red carpet ambiance?
Want guests to confuse your groom with James Bond?
  • Rustic wedding in the country or modern loft wedding in the city?

Whatever your budget, our custom-tailored suits or tuxedos will lessen the stress of the men who are most important to you — from the father of the bride to the groom, from groomsmen to the ring bearer.

  • Rental tuxedos remind them of bowling alley shoes and/or roller skates.
These men get high-quality clothing they can choose to wear to other special occasions.
  • Rushing to pick up and return the tux days before and after the wedding isn’t fun.
We conveniently deliver the bespoke clothing to your doorstep.
As the organizer, everybody’s already checking in with you.
  • Relaxed, confident and comfortable is how men feel in custom-made clothes.
These clothes are tailored to personal measurements, presenting men at their personal best.

Messenger Bag or Backpack?

As far as the boxers or briefs debate goes, we just want men to be comfortable. If you can’t feel secure in your skivvies or pants, we can’t make you feel confident in a bespoke suit or tuxedo.

On the other hand, The SF Tailor team can help you answer the ‘briefcase or backpack’ question. Our studio discussions can get heated about pairing our high-quality work with a thoughtless choice in accessories. You already saved yourself time and money by suiting up with us — instead of running around to the department stores, trying on ill-fitting suits, and ordering alterations.

Deal or No Deal? Do you want Howie Mandel’s briefcase?

Let us save you even more time and money by sharing insights regarding work-appropriate bags.

It’s inexcusable for any professional to carry papers, tablets a/o laptops, wallet, etc. in a clumsy manner. We know you don’t want your father’s bulky briefcase … unless it promises to bring you thousands of dollars. Here are the facts on professional, practical and stylish work bags:

Boconi - Tyler slim leather briefcase

Boconi

A briefcase or commuter portfolio remains the most popular. It’s classic, sturdy, and a leather one gives you a sophisticated appearance. It needn’t be boxy or resemble an antique doctor’s bag unless you want it to. Everybody can personalize accessories.

The messenger bag / tech bag has risen in popularity. It’s hip with its single shoulder strap to hold your documents and electronic devices. It’s a trendy briefcase. We’re a bit old school and prefer cowhide, but tech and sport fans like a padded, quality nylon laptop attaché. We advise against canvas, which looks collegiate.

Ben Minkoff - Core Bondi leather backpack

Ben Minkoff

The backpack does not necessarily suggest immaturity. If you carry a heavier load, divide that weary burden over two strong shoulders. Again leather (or suede) will give you a more polished look, instead of those nylon Jansport bags from high school. Whatever you choose, do not use your college or continent-trekking backpack.

Don’t forget the duffel or sports bag if you prefer to hit the gym and workout after work. You may have wonderful memories with your old (smelly) Nike bag… but it’s time to move up with those job promotions.

Note: be careful when you accept freebies at trade shows. There’s no such thing as a free lunch. Do you really want to advertise and affiliate yourself with that brand and logo, especially when you’re wearing your go-to suit of confidence?

Messenger bag or backpack? You’ve got more than two options — and remember that the SF Tailor offers you fully-customizable bespoke suits or tuxedos at the most affordable prices.

QC for GQ Groomsmen

First things first, The SF Tailor team wishes the best to the brides and grooms. We also want to thank you for the privilege to tailor custom made tuxedos and suits for your special occasion. We will responsibly suit up the guys to look attractive on the day of — and especially in those long-lasting photographs.

We know many people have worked hard to organize a beautiful wedding ceremony and reception. To help you execute these detailed plans, may we present 5 reminders to do some quality control (QC) for your GQ groomsmen:

    1. Most boys dislike wearing formalwear. Sometimes they grow into men who detest it.
Our bespoke clothing makes them feel more comfortable. Unfortunately we can’t do much about fear of public speaking. Armed with some basic tips and after some homework, making toasts and giving speeches can be slightly easier whether you’re the best man, father of the bride or groom.
    2. Break-in new dress shoes two weeks to one month before the wedding.
Don’t procrastinate because sore feet aren’t the memory you want. After you buy new dress shoes, wear them in your home or office for 10-15 minutes daily. Gradually lengthen that time. Shortcuts to stretching your shoes include having a professional cobbler do it or buying a DIY stretcher… Alternatively polish up existing dress shoes if you’re going to wear them.
    3. Cut or trim your hair 3 – 7 days before the wedding. You won’t have time on the day of, and you may need a week for some hair to grow back. Consider getting a professional barber to shave or trim your facial hair a day or two prior to the ceremony.
    4. Between the time your groomsmen received their custom tailored suits or tuxedos from us and the wedding day, wrinkles can set in. Don’t iron these yourself for this occasion. It’ll take us 2 weeks to replace it! For a few dollars or quid, a professional dry cleaner can iron out wrinkles a week before the event
    5. Last but not least, sleep the night before the BIG DAY!
We know these are your friends. So relax with them, whether you prefer a round of golf or a few rounds of beer. The wedding day is like a marathon, so you’ll need stamina. Those men must fulfill their duties, from escorting guests to serenading the bride with JT’s choreography.

Dear SF Tailor

Graduate seeks custom fit clothes, entering workforce with confidence

Dear SF Tailor,

I’m graduating college soon, so I’m on the lookout for two main items:

(1) dark brown sportcoat with soft shoulders, a lapel of approximately 3 inches, and a relatively modern cut. I like ____ but it’ll cost me $700. Also ____ had only brown plaids. I’ve looked at a large number of retailers… but my budget is $400. I’m willing to compromise a bit if its something perfect.

(2) office appropriate trousers. I’ve tried _____’s essential cut, but it was too baggy on me, and the next cut down was too slim in the thigh and seat. I’m in limbo since I prefer a slimmer leg opening, which rules out brands like _____ with its 9-inch design.

Eager Eagle at Auburn

Dear Eager Eagle at Auburn,

Congratulations on your upcoming graduation! Best wishes with the job hunt after the celebrations and holidays are done.

We’re glad you know exactly what you want. How soon do you want the sportcoat and trousers? We could fulfill your order in 15 days.

Take time to see how much you can customize your jacket on our site. The price costs under $180. We also provide tailor-made pants for less than $90. A two-piece bespoke suit starts at $260, which is a much better deal than buying the blazer and trousers separately.

If you know your measurements, you’re even closer to that perfect fit you mentioned. Let us know how we can further assist you.

Baby, It’s Cold — and Coat Season — Outside

Brrrr! Your holiday shopping is off to a good start, but you have procrastinated and need a proper winter coat for yourself… or somebody you love who’s too stubborn to slow down and buy himself or herself an overcoat. We also tailor bespoke women’s coats, especially for petite and taller ladies. Learn these basics to bundling up and bracing the elements.

Don’t let the cold stop your ambition!

Stavanger sample img. Final look depends on fabric you select.

Fabrics. The best fabrics are wool and cashmere. Cashmere is much warmer, but doesn’t last long for the higher price. Its durability is short, so return on investment (ROI) is less satisfying. Wool will give you more value and as the outer fabric, it does all the work.

Surprisingly only an acetate lining is needed. It layers nicely and comfortably over your clothes. It doesn’t add extra bulk and layers to your body silhouette.

Style. Charcoal / gray colors pair well with black, brown or navy suits. Not everybody likes the attention of a camel or khaki coat, but for what it’s worth our clients garner more compliments in those lighter colors.

Younger men opt for bold patterns, contrasting colors, even trendy buttons — but that’s not as versatile. The shorter Saint-Etienne is slightly less formal, and pairs well with jeans at the weekends.

However you want it, we’ll tailor it for you.

Fit. The right fit is generally one size larger than your typical suit jacket / blazer. This allows you to move freely without extra layers chocking your neck and burdening shoulders. Don’t be tempted to supersize or oversize your coat. You’ll lose the body heat your overcoat is designed to keep in.

Leave the tailoring to us, so you can resume your busy year-end schedule and fit in time with your friends and familiy. In the meanwhile, get festive with us, TheSFtailor.com team, and sing along with one of our favorite carols.
